Adepoju Backs Iheanacho’s Return to Super Eagles After Celtic Revival

Former Nigerian international Mutiu Adepoju has expressed strong support for a possible return of striker Kelechi Iheanacho to the Nigeria national football team, following the forward’s improved form at Scottish club Celtic FC.

Iheanacho, who joined Celtic during the summer, has had a mixed season affected by recurring hamstring injuries. Despite the setbacks, he has managed six goals and one assist in 18 appearances, with recent performances reigniting discussions about his international future.

A standout moment came in the Scottish Cup semi final against St Mirren, where the 29 year old scored twice in extra time, helping to underline his ing influence when fit and in form.

Adepoju praised Iheanacho’s quality and experience, noting that his resurgence could make him a strong candidate for a recall if he maintains consistency.

He described Iheanacho as a proven goal scorer who has contributed significantly to Nigerian football over the years, adding that injuries had only temporarily affected his rhythm.

According to Adepoju, the striker’s recent performances show encouraging signs of recovery and improved sharpness in front of goal.

Iheanacho, who has earned 58 international caps for Nigeria, previously played for Manchester City and Leicester City, where he built a reputation as a reliable ing option capable of delivering in crucial moments.

His last appearance for Nigeria came during the 2025 Unity Cup, and with upcoming fixtures including matches against Portugal and Poland, discussions have intensified over potential squad adjustments under national team coach Eric Chelle.

Adepoju emphasized that experience remains important in the national team setup and suggested that Iheanacho still has the ability to contribute at the highest level if he remains fit and consistent.

The decision on his return will ultimately depend on his form in the coming months and the technical direction of the Super Eagles coaching team.
