The United States has taken a significant step toward bolstering South Korea’s air defense capabilities by approving a potential $125 million sale of advanced air-to-air missiles and related equipment. The State Department announced Friday that the proposed foreign military sale includes 103 AIM-9X Sidewinder Block II tactical missiles, 10 guidance units, and various support equipment including training aids and spare parts.
The proposed government-to-government transaction now requires congressional notification and review before proceeding. South Korea formally requested the purchase as part of its ongoing efforts to modernize its air force and enhance its defensive posture against evolving regional threats. The AIM-9X Sidewinder represents one of the most advanced short-range air-to-air missiles currently in service, featuring improved maneuverability and target acquisition capabilities.
State Department officials emphasized that the sale directly supports American foreign policy objectives in the Indo-Pacific region.
