A Reform UK councillor has withdrawn her resignation after accidentally submitting it to the wrong local authority, in an embarrassing administrative mix-up that has sparked political controversy. Christine Duffy, elected to Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council in May during a significant surge in support for her party, sent her resignation letter to Kidsgrove Town Council on August 4, a body she left in October 2024 and has not served on since.
The letter cited her reasons for stepping down as receiving very little or no training for the role, highlighting concerns about support for newly elected councillors. Officials subsequently forwarded the notice to the appropriate authorities at Newcastle-under-Lyme Council, but by that time Duffy had decided to reverse her decision and remain in office.
Writing on the Reform UK Newcastle-under-Lyme Facebook page, Duffy expressed outrage that her letter had somehow been obtained by the Kidsgrove Independents and was now being exploited for party political purposes. She insisted her position could not be clearer, stating she remains a Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Councillor for the Town ward and will continue carrying out the role she was elected to perform.
The incident has prompted speculation about political manoeuvring and the challenges facing newly elected councillors from smaller parties who may lack elished support structures and training programmes available to representatives from more elished political organizations.
