The legal team representing Nnamdi Kanu has publicly challenged the Nigerian government to stop evading the courtroom and face the appeal filed by the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra against his conviction. Kanu is currently serving a life sentence in Sokoto Prison following his conviction on terrorism charges, but his lawyers insist the government is deliberately delaying justice.
Barrister Christopher Chidera, a member of the Global Legal Consortium representing Kanu, issued a strongly worded statement on Wednesday supporting the Okwu-Kanu family’s demand for immediate hearing of the appeal. The family had revealed Tuesday that Kanu had written to both the Chief Justice of Nigeria and the President of the Court of Appeal requesting the immediate listing and hearing of his two pending cases, prompted by what they described as prolonged delays in proceedings concerning his continued detention.
Chidera directly questioned the government’s motives, asking why federal authorities were running from the courtroom if they believed Kanu’s conviction was legally sound. He challenged officials to present the law under which Kanu was convicted before the Court of Appeal, accusing them of hiding behind what he termed public legal illiteracy.
The case continues to draw national attention as the legal battle between the detained separatist leader and the Nigerian government remains unresolved, with both sides now locked in a standoff over when substantive hearings will proceed.
