The Political Action Committee, PAC, of the Pan Yoruba socio-political group, Yoruba First, has called on President Bola Tinubu to move beyond rhetoric and implement urgent structural reforms to address Nigeria’s deepening insecurity and governance challenges.

The committee condemned the recently thwarted coup attempt and assassination plot against President Tinubu and his top officials, orchestrated by elements of the military, largely of Arewa extraction. In a statement, the Director of the Committee, Dr. Bukola Adeniji, described the actions as unconstitutional and a reflection of Nigeria’s divided and poorly structured federal system.

According to Adeniji, the over-centralized structure of the Nigerian state has failed to protect lives, with terrorism, banditry, and mass ings continuing across the North, South West, South East, Middle Belt, and South South regions. He stressed that communities continue to suffer while perpetrators operate with impunity, and called for urgent reforms to restore justice, equity, and security.

The PAC highlighted four key areas for reform including true ethnolinguistic federalism, devolution of powers to federating units, creation of regional security architecture, and fiscal federalism allowing regions to control resources for development and social welfare. Local accountability, ensuring communities can hold leaders responsible for security failures, was also emphasized.

Dr. Adeniji warned that Nigeria’s current over-centralized system is incapable of addressing the root causes of insecurity, and only a restructured federation anchored on ethnolinguistic realities can achieve peace, ility, and prosperity. The committee urged civil society, traditional institutions, and regional bos to support these reforms and called on Nigerians across all regions to reject violence and demand a political structure that protects life and dignity.

The PAC concluded that Nigeria must choose reform over repression, restructuring over decay, and life over endless mourning.
