Nollywood actress Victoria Inyama has shared a deeply personal account of her experience with Female Genital Mutilation, describing it as both traumatic and, in her view, influential in shaping her self control.

Speaking during an Instagram Live session with media personality Daddy Freeze, Inyama revealed that she underwent the procedure as a child while living with her grandmother in a rural community. She recounted the pain and fear surrounding the experience, which occurred when she was about five years old.

Despite describing the practice as harmful, the actress said she believes it has helped her manage her ual urges later in life. Her comments have since generated widespread reactions, reigniting conversations around the cultural, psychological, and health implications of the practice.

Female Genital Mutilation, widely condemned by global health bos, involves the partial or total removal of external female genitalia for non medical reasons. It is considered a violation of human rights and is associated with serious health risks, including infections, complications in childbirth, and long term psychological effects.

Inyama explained that although she endured trauma, she views the outcome from a personal perspective, adding that it contributed to her sense of discipline. However, she clarified that she did not subject her own children to the procedure, noting that decisions regarding them involve broader family considerations.

Her remarks have sparked renewed public debate, with many emphasizing the need for continued awareness and education about the dangers of FGM, while others reflect on how deeply rooted cultural practices continue to influence personal experiences and beliefs.

Health experts and advocacy groups consistently stress that efforts to end FGM must focus on education, community engagement, and the protection of children’s rights.
