Vegas Golden Knights Owner Bill Foley Enters Race for NBA Expansion Team

Bill Foley is making his move to transform Las Vegas into a complete professional sports hub. The Vegas Golden Knights owner has officially thrown his hat into the ring for an NBA expansion franchise, betting that his track record of building a Stanley Cup contender from scratch will convince league officials that Sin City deserves basketball’s biggest stage.

Foley’s sports empire extends well beyond the Nevada desert. His portfolio includes AFC Bournemouth in the English Premier League and FC Lorient in France’s Ligue 1, demonstrating an appetite for building competitive teams across multiple continents and sports. Now he wants to replicate the Golden Knights’ remarkable success story with an NBA franchise that would share the gleaming T-Mobile Arena on the Las Vegas Strip, a venue that has already proven itself as a world class destination for major sporting events and entertainment.

“Las Vegas has earned its place among great sports cities in America, and an NBA team belongs here,” Foley stated in his announcement. He emphasized his organization’s proven ability to build championship caliber teams, noting that the same commitment to excellence and community engagement that defined the Golden Knights’ rise would carry over to any NBA venture. Foley added that he expects to bring in a limited number of minority stakeholders to support the bid, which industry analysts project will cost somewhere between seven and ten billion dollars.

The timing of Foley’s announcement comes as Las Vegas continues its transformation from a sports betting capital to a legitimate major league sports market. What was once considered too risky or transient to support professional teams now hosts franchises across multiple leagues. The WNBA’s Aces have won championships, the NFL’s Raiders have settled into their spectacular new stadium, and the Golden Knights have become one of hockey’s premier franchises. Major League Baseball’s Athletics are scheduled to arrive in 2028, further cementing the city’s status as a serious sports destination.

Foley faces stiff competition in a process that the NBA opened to exclusive bidding in March. Seattle, which lost the SuperSonics in 2008 and has been clamoring for basketball’s return ever since, represents the other preferred expansion location. Six current NHL owners already hold primary stakes in NBA teams, suggesting that the league is comfortable with cross sport ownership arrangements. Foley’s integrated approach, using existing infrastructure and a proven organizational structure, could give him an edge in what promises to be an intensely competitive selection process.

“This is the NBA’s decision to make,” Foley acknowledged with characteristic restraint. “Our job is to provide the league a Las Vegas option that is ready, credible, and built to last.” Whether the NBA chooses Las Vegas, Seattle, or both markets for expansion remains an open question, but Foley has positioned himself as the clear frontrunner in Nevada. His success with the Golden Knights, who went from expansion team to championship contender in record time, provides a compelling blueprint for what an NBA franchise in Las Vegas could become. As the league evaluates its options over the coming months, all eyes will be on whether Foley can work his magic once again and bring professional basketball to the Entertainment Capital of the World.
