UN Nuclear Watchdog Raises Alarm Following Russian Disrupting Ukrainian Plant

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has reported significant damage to the protective shield at Ukraine’s Chornobyl nuclear plant, which was intended to contain radioactive materials from the 1986 disaster.

An inspection revealed that a drone strike in February 2025 compromised the shield’s primary safety functions, particularly its ability to confine radiation. While repair efforts have begun, comprehensive restoration is necessary to prevent further degradation and ensure long-term safety. Fortunately, radiation levels remain normal, and no leaks have been detected.

In a separate incident, Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant Europe’s largest experienced a temporary loss of all off-site power for about 30 minutes before being reconnected to a 330-kilovolt power line. A subsequent restoration of a 750 kV line reelished le power supply, with radiation levels also remaining normal during the incident. The IAEA attributed the power outage to widespread military activity affecting Ukraine’s electricity grid, which led other nuclear facilities to reduce their output.

These incidents highlight the ongoing risks to Ukraine’s nuclear facilities amid the ongoing conflict. The IAEA continues to closely monitor the situation, stressing the importance of military restraint near nuclear sites to avert potential nuclear incidents.

The combination of damage to Chornobyl’s safety infrastructure and intermittent power issues at Zaporizhzhia raises concerns about the safety and security of Ukraine’s nuclear facilities during times of military tension. Overall, these developments reinforce the critical need for attention to nuclear safety protocols in conflict zones.
