UK Minister Reaffirms Commitment to Nigeria’s Fight Against Terrorism in North-East

The UK Minister of State for Defence, Lord Vernon Coaker, has underscored the enduring defence partnership between the United Kingdom and Nigeria during his working visit to the Headquarters of the Joint Task Force Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) in Maiduguri. This visit was part of ongoing efforts to strengthen collaboration in counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations in Nigeria’s North-East.

Lord Coaker, accompanied by senior UK government officials, acknowledged the symbolic gesture of the Honour Guard, representing the mutual respect and partnership between the two nations’ military forces. He emphasized Nigeria’s role as a key ally and leader in West Africa, stating, “His Majesty’s Government recognises Nigeria as a key ally and a leader in West Africa. Together, we stand for democracy, human rights and the rule of law.”

He reiterated the UK’s commitment to supporting Nigeria in its fight against terrorism, stating, “Your conflict is our conflict and your security is our security.” Coaker highlighted specific contributions from the UK which include counter-improvised explosive devices (IED) training, equipment provision, and mentorship for the elishment of the Counter-IED Coordination Cell in the North-East.

Maj.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, the Theatre Commander of OPHK, welcomed Lord Coaker and his team, praising the UK for its consistent support in combating insurgency. He noted the visit as a testament to the long-standing cordial relationship between Nigeria and the UK. “This visit validates the strong partnership between our nations,” Shaibu remarked.

The commander outlined the mission of the task force, which includes restoring normalcy, enabling socio-economic activities, and facilitating the resettlement of displaced persons. He stressed the importance of not just material support but also continuous training to adapt to evolving security threats.

Shaibu further appreciated the UK’s role in setting up the Counter-IED Coordination Cell, which has become crucial for intelligence gathering and dismantling IED networks. He also highlighted the Instructor Development Programme in collaboration with BDS-WA, which accelerates the training of personnel from Nigeria and the Multinational Joint Task Force, fostering regional cooperation.

The visit signifies a continued commitment from the UK to bolster Nigeria’s security operations, providing not only physical resources but also strategic support and expertise to ensure that the region can move towards peace and ility.
