Thomas Tuchel has defended his controversial England World Cup squad selection, insisting he has “no fear” after leaving out several high profile players in favour of a balanced team built to win the tournament.
The England coach omitted several major names from his squad for the FIFA World Cup scheduled to take place across the United States Mexico and Canada, including Phil Foden Cole Palmer and Trent Alexander Arnold.
Other notable exclusions include Harry Maguire Morgan Gibbs White Luke Shaw and Adam Wharton, in a selection that has sparked widespread debate among fans and analysts.
Tuchel, speaking at Wembley Stadium, said the decision was guided by the need to build the strongest possible team rather than simply selecting the most talented individuals. He stressed that tournaments are won by cohesive teams rather than collections of star players.
He also revealed that the final decision came after weeks and months of evaluation, noting that difficult choices were unavoidable given the depth of talent available in the England pool.
One of the most surprising inclusions in the squad is Ivan Toney, currently playing for Al Ahli in the Saudi Pro League. Tuchel admitted the selection was unexpected but said Toney offers specific qualities that could prove vital during the tournament.
According to the coach, Toney brings physical presence aerial strength and finishing ability, making him a valuable option alongside captain Harry Kane especially in situations where England are chasing goals.
Tuchel also outlined his ambition for the team, stating that England must aim openly to win the World Cup while respecting the challenges of the competition. He described his goal as building a “brotherhood” within the squad capable of handling pressure at the highest level.
England will begin their World Cup campaign against Croatia in Dallas on June 17 before facing Ghana and Panama in the group stage.
