Senior officers of the Nigerian Armed Forces, political leaders, and family members have paid tribute to the late Military Governor of Kwara State, Ibrahim Taiwo, describing him as a disciplined officer and visionary administrator whose legacy endures five decades after his assassination.

The Chief of Defence Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, and the Chief of Army Staff, Waidi Shaibu, led tributes at a memorial remembrance in Ogbomosho, honouring Taiwo, who was assassinated on February 13, 1976, during the failed coup that also claimed the life of then Head of State, Murtala Ramat Muhammed.

Represented by Major General Akinniyi Oyelade, the CDS described Taiwo as a man of courage, discipline, and foresight whose leadership focused on responsibility, integrity, and service to the people. Major General Nansak Shagaya, representing the COAS, praised Taiwo as a gallant solr whose loyalty to Nigeria was unwavering.

Family members reflected on his personal legacy. His son, Ahmed Taiwo, recalled that though he was only ten years old at the time of his father’s death, the stories of his integrity and dedication shaped his understanding of service and honour.

Community leaders also remembered Taiwo as a distinguished son of Ogbomosho whose contributions brought pride to Oyo State and Nigeria. Speakers at the memorial highlighted that the best way to honour him is by strengthening democratic institutions, promoting good governance, and fostering national unity.

The event underscored the lasting impact of Col. Taiwo’s service and the sacrifices of those who have served the nation.
