Tottenham Hotspur slipped deeper into relegation trouble after a 1-0 defeat to Sunderland on Sunday, marking a disappointing start for new manager Roberto De Zerbi.
The Italian, formerly of Brighton and Hove Albion and Olympique de Marseille, was appointed in a desperate attempt to steer Spurs away from relegation. However, his first match in charge failed to produce the desired turnaround, leaving the North London club stuck in the drop zone.
Tottenham, now on their third manager of the season, have not won a Premier League match since December, raising fears of their first relegation from the top flight since 1977. Despite a bright start, including a penalty that was overturned by VAR, Spurs could not find a breakthrough.
Goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky made crucial saves to keep Tottenham in the game, while at the other end, Sunderland’s resilience paid off. The decisive moment came in the second half when a deflected effort from Nordi Mukiele looped into the net off Micky van de Ven.
De Zerbi attempted to ce the game by introducing Joao Palhinha, Pape Matar Sarr, and Mathys Tel, but Spurs could not find an equaliser. The situation worsened when captain Cristian Romero was forced off with an injury.
Tottenham are now two points behind West Ham United with just six matches remaining, highlighting the scale of their संकट despite being one of the world’s richest clubs.
Elsewhere, Nottingham Forest drew 1-1 with Aston Villa, while Crystal Palace came from behind to beat Newcastle United 2-1.
Attention now turns to Manchester City, managed by Pep Guardiola, who are aiming to close the gap on league leaders Arsenal. City face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, with both sides chasing crucial points in the race for the title and Champions League qualification.
