A leading tax expert, Olayinka Oyebola, has called on tax practitioners across Nigeria to prioritise ethical standards over short term financial gains in the discharge of their professional duties.
Oyebola made the appeal in a statement issued on Saturday while congratulating members of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria following the successful conclusion of its 28th Annual Tax Conference held in Abuja.
The conference, themed “Tax Reforms and Global Relevance: Positioning Nigeria’s Tax System for a Sustainable Future,” took place between May 11 and May 15, 2026, at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre.
He stressed that the integrity of the tax profession depends on strict adherence to ethical conduct, warning that any compromise could undermine public trust and government confidence in the system.
According to him, Nigeria’s tax framework must continue to evolve in line with global best practices to close regulatory gaps and strengthen fiscal governance. He added that the discussions at the conference provide a roadmap for improving local tax administration and aligning it with international standards.
Oyebola also commended the leadership of CITN for organising what he described as a highly impactful conference that brought together experts capable of shaping fiscal policy both locally and globally.
He further urged practitioners to remain vigilant against unethical actors within the financial system, warning that reputational risks in tax practice must be taken seriously.
The tax expert reaffirmed his firm’s commitment to transparency and continued cooperation with regulatory authorities in Nigeria and abroad, stating that compliance remains central to sustainable professional practice.
