The SUNU Group has commemorated the third anniversary of the passing of its founder, Mr Pathe Dione, with remembrance activities held across its operations in 17 African countries, including Nigeria.
According to a statement from SUNU Assurances Nigeria Plc, the commemoration featured thanksgiving services and special prayers in churches and mosques, with employees gathering simultaneously across the Group’s African footprint to honour the late founder’s legacy.
Speaking during the event in Lagos, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of SUNU Assurances Nigeria Plc, Dr Samuel Ogbodu, described the late Pathe Dione as a man deeply committed to humanity and Africa’s economic development. He said the annual remembrance reflects the enduring impact of the founder’s vision on thousands of families across the continent.
“The founder was deeply passionate about humanity and Africa’s development. His vision created jobs, supported livelihoods, and continues to put food on people’s tables across Africa,” Ogbodu said.
He added that SUNU’s continued expansion and strong financial performance are deliberate efforts to sustain the founder’s legacy. According to him, since Dione’s passing, SUNU has elished a new subsidiary in the Democratic Republic of Congo and is working toward further expansion across Africa.
Ogbodu also reaffirmed the Group’s commitment to recapitalisation in Nigeria, noting that SUNU Assurances Nigeria is seeking shareholders’ approval to raise N9bn through a rights issue and private placement. He disclosed that SUNU Group, which holds about 83 per cent of the company, is ready to inject over $500m, with strong interest already shown by investors.
Also speaking, the Executive Director, Control and Risk Management, SUNU Assurances Nigeria, and Regional Manager for Anglophone Subsidiaries, Mr Elie Ogounigni, described the late founder as an institution builder whose vision was designed to endure beyond his lifetime.
Similarly, the Managing Director of SUNU Health Nigeria Limited, Dr Patrick Korie, said the founder’s principles of service, discipline and people-centred leadership continue to guide the Group’s operations.
