Yoruba Nation activist Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, is set to return home following interventions by prominent South West traditional rulers supporting his reintegration, according to his spokesperson, Olayomi Koiki. Key figures involved include the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja II.
Igboho, who went into self-exile in 2025, had appealed to the federal government led by President Bola Tinubu to remove his name from the wanted list, emphasizing that he is not a criminal. His exile affected his ability to travel internationally, access his bank accounts, and exercise his civil rights, despite court judgments in his favor.
Koiki confirmed that Igboho is now cleared to return and that arrangements are underway, though no specific date has been announced. “This is a moment of joy for Ibadanland and Yorubaland as a whole. Chief Adeyemo is now free to return home,” Koiki stated. He also expressed gratitude to President Tinubu, Yoruba monarchs, and Yoruba supporters worldwide for their backing during Igboho’s time away.
Igboho rose to national prominence in January 2021 when he issued a seven-day eviction ultimatum to Fulani herdsmen in Igangan, Oyo State, following the ing of Fatai Aborode. Later that year, operatives of the State Security Service (SSS) raided his Ibadan residence, resulting in a violent confrontation and two deaths. He fled to the Benin Republic and attempted to travel to Germany but was arrested at Cotonou airport on July 19, 2021, and detained for nearly two years before being released in March 2022.
Igboho remains a key figure in the advocacy for Yoruba rights and regional security, and his imminent return is expected to be celebrated across Ibadanland and Yorubaland.
