The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has appointed Somali referee Omar Artan to officiate Saturday’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarter-final between Nigeria and Algeria at the Stade de Marrakech.

Artan, widely regarded as one of Africa’s top referees, is among the officials selected for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He previously officiated the Algeria versus Mauritania group-stage match at the 2023 AFCON, earning praise for his consistency and fairness.

The Super Eagles booked their place in the quarter-finals with a dominant 4-0 win over Mozambique on Monday, with Victor Osimhen scoring twice and Ademola Lookman providing three assists. Algeria secured their spot with a dramatic 1-0 extra-time victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo, courtesy of a 118th-minute strike from substitute Adil Boulbina.

Saturday’s clash is a rematch of the 2019 AFCON semi-final, which Algeria won 2-1 with a late free kick from Riyad Mahrez, before going on to claim their second continental title. Since that triumph, the Desert Foxes have failed to progress beyond the group stage in subsequent AFCON editions, while Nigeria reached the final of the 2023 tournament in Ivory Coast.

CAF’s appointment of Artan underscores the importance of the fixture, with both teams aiming to advance to the semi-finals and strengthen their credentials on the continent.
