Senator Ned Nwoko, representing Delta North in the National Assembly, is reportedly on the brink of defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) due to alleged marginalization by Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and the PDP leadership. This was revealed by Nwoko’s Director of Communications, Gloria Okolugbo, during an interview on Arise TV.

Okolugbo stated that Senator Nwoko had expressed his intent to leave the PDP in a recent meeting with stakeholders, supporters, and constituents from Delta North. She cited specific instances of frustration, including:

Lack of Support for Projects: The PDP and Governor Oborevwori allegedly did not assist in funding key projects like the Okpai Independent Power Project (IPP) and the Ogwashi-Uku Dam, which were meant to bring electricity and water to numerous communities in Delta North.
Internal Party Issues: Okolugbo criticized the PDP for lacking internal democracy, which has contributed to Nwoko’s decision. She mentioned that Senator Nwoko felt his campaign promises to his constituents were unachievable within the current PDP framework due to this marginalization.

The defection is set to alter the political landscape in Delta State significantly, as with this move, the APC would control all three senatorial seats from the state. Okolugbo highlighted the potential impact on the PDP:

Political Repercussions: With the defection, the PDP in Delta State would lose its representation in the Senate, potentially weakening its position in state and national politics.
Factionalization: She pointed out that one of the legal grounds for defection in Nigerian politics is the factionalization of a party, suggesting that the PDP’s internal strife was a significant factor in Nwoko’s decision.

Okolugbo emphasized the importance of strengthening democratic institutions, advocating for a balance of power, transparency, and accountability in governance. She stressed that Nwoko’s commitment to delivering governance benefits to his constituents was the core of his political engagement, which he felt was not supported by his current party’s leadership.

This development has stirred tension within the PDP in Delta State, with Okolugbo noting that the announcement of Nwoko’s defection is imminent, marking a significant shift in Delta’s political dynamics.
