Peter Obi, the former Governor of Anambra State and 2023 presidential candidate for the Labour Party, has recently re-emerged as a significant figure in Nigerian politics. His activities over the past few months underscore his continued influence and potential impact on the nation’s political landscape.

In January 2025, Obi clarified his stance on political coalitions. Initially, he had expressed reservations about alliances formed solely for power acquisition. However, he later emphasized his openness to coalitions that prioritize Nigeria’s progress and the welfare of its citizens. He stated, “I am not against coalition… I am for it, not for a power grab but to position Nigeria for greatness.” (vanguardngr.com)

By March 2025, Obi’s position evolved further as he engaged in discussions with key political figures. He met with Bala Mohammed, Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors Forum, signaling potential collaboration ahead of the 2027 elections. Governor Mohammed expressed his readiness to work with Obi, highlighting mutual respect and shared visions for Nigeria’s future. (pulse.ng)

In May 2025, Obi’s political trajectory took a significant turn when he joined forces with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and other opposition leaders to form a coalition aimed at challenging President Bola Tinubu’s administration in the upcoming 2027 elections. This coalition emerged in response to President Tinubu’s controversial declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, which the opposition leaders condemned as unconstitutional. Atiku Abubakar confirmed the coalition’s intent, stating, “Yes, this is the birth of the coalition of opposition ahead of 2027.” (saharareporters.com)

Despite these collaborative efforts, Obi has faced criticism from political figures such as Senate President Godswill Akpabio. Akpabio questioned Obi’s leadership capabilities, suggesting that resolving internal party issues within the Labour Party should precede national leadership aspirations. (saharareporters.com)

Obi’s recent engagements and the formation of the opposition coalition underscore his enduring presence and influence in Nigerian politics. His strategic alliances and responses to national developments indicate a proactive approach to shaping the country’s political future. As the 2027 elections approach, Obi’s role and the dynamics of the coalition will be pivotal in Nigeria’s political discourse.
