Nigerian writer and filmmaker Onyeka Nwelue has revealed that Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka played a significant role in helping him secure residency in Japan, describing the intervention as pivotal to his relocation process.

In a series of posts shared on his X account, Nwelue expressed deep gratitude to Soyinka, stating that the literary icon acted as his guarantor during the application process. He credited the endorsement as a major factor in his successful residency approval.

According to Nwelue, Soyinka provided a formal letter of introduction to Japanese authorities, vouching for his character and professional mission. In the letter, Soyinka described Nwelue as a bona fide visitor to Japan engaged in artistic and cultural work, and assured authorities of his compliance with local laws and cultural norms.

Soyinka also noted that he had collaborated with Nwelue on various projects and considered him a responsible professional whose work could strengthen cultural ties between Nigeria and Japan. He emphasized that such exces help foster mutual understanding among younger generations of writers and artists in both countries.

Nwelue further shared that the support came at a deeply personal level, describing it as a defining moment in his journey as a creative professional. He also highlighted Soyinka’s rare gesture of promoting his book The Beginning of Everything Colourful, noting that the endorsement helped increase its visibility and strengthened his engagement with Japanese cultural institutions.

The writer explained that his literary work, which explores themes connected to Japan, contributed to his growing relationship with the Japanese Embassy in Abuja and ultimately supported his residency process.

In his reflections, Nwelue stressed the importance of acknowledging acts of support while people are still alive, praising Soyinka for his mentorship and generosity.

He also shared visual moments from his application process, including documents linked to his residency approval, describing the experience as the culmination of years of cultural and artistic engagement.

The development highlights the continued influence of elished literary figures like Soyinka in supporting emerging Nigerian creatives on global platforms.
