Authorities in Cyprus have imposed quarantine measures following an outbreak of foot and mouth disease, aiming to contain the highly contagious livestock infection and prevent its spread to other regions. The measures include movement restrictions on animals and enhanced monitoring of farms within affected areas.

Agricultural officials confirmed that several cases were detected during routine inspections. Veterinary teams were immediately dispatched to assess herds and implement biosecurity protocols. Farmers in designated zones have been instructed to isolate animals and comply with strict sanitation guidelines.

Foot and mouth disease primarily affects cloven hoofed animals such as cattle, sheep, and goats. While it poses minimal risk to humans, the virus can spread rapidly among livestock, leading to severe economic consequences for agricultural sectors.

The Cypriot government has notified international partners and relevant European authorities in accordance with disease reporting standards. Export controls may be adjusted depending on the scale of the outbreak and the effectiveness of containment efforts.

Farmers expressed concern about potential financial losses resulting from restrictions and possible culling of infected animals. Agricultural associations called for compensation measures and technical support to mitigate the impact on rural livelihoods.

Veterinary experts emphasized that early detection and swift action are critical to preventing wider transmission. Disinfection checkpoints have been elished in affected districts, and surveillance has been intensified in neighboring areas.

The outbreak comes at a time when global supply chains are already under strain from other disruptions. Officials said they are committed to transparency and rapid response to protect both public confidence and the agricultural economy.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have urged farmers and transport operators to adhere strictly to the imposed guidelines until further notice.
