The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers has reaffirmed its commitment to improving the welfare, safety, and representation of workers in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, as the industry continues to face mounting economic and operational challenges.
In its 2026 International Workers Day message, the union acknowledged the difficult conditions faced by workers, including workplace hazards, economic strain, and concerns over safety and unity. It emphasized that despite these challenges, oil and gas workers remain central to sustaining Nigeria’s economy and energy supply.
NUPENG President, Salimon Oladiti, praised the resilience and dedication of workers, describing their contributions as indispensable. He noted that the current climate makes this year’s May Day not just a celebration of labour, but also a reflection on the sacrifices made by workers across the sector.
The union stated that its new leadership is focused on delivering meaningful reforms that will directly impact members. These include improved welfare packages, enhanced safety standards, and stronger advocacy for workers’ rights. Oladiti assured members that the union is determined to become more responsive and action oriented in addressing their concerns.
He also called on workers to remain united and vigilant, stressing that collective strength and professionalism are essential in navigating the evolving challenges within the industry. According to him, solidarity among workers will play a key role in shaping policies and securing better outcomes for all stakeholders.
Despite ongoing pressures, NUPENG expressed optimism about the future of the sector. The union reiterated its commitment to standing by workers and ensuring that their voices are heard, while working towards a more secure, fair, and prosperous environment for all.
