The inaugural Nigeria Super League got off to an exciting start on Saturday at the TBS Cricket Oval in Lagos, with Northern Lions and Middle Belt Tigers both recording impressive victories in their opening matches.
In the first match, Northern Lions delivered a disciplined all round performance to defeat Southern Sharks by four wickets.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, Southern Sharks struggled against a tight bowling led by captain Okpe Sylvester and Reigneth Osagie. The Sharks were eventually restricted to 89 all out in 20 overs after losing early wickets and failing to build partnerships.
In response, Northern Lions paced their chase carefully, with wicketkeeper batsman Hosanna Omokhobhio scoring a steady 30 runs off 24 balls. Captain Okpe Sylvester also contributed 20 runs as the Lions reached the target in 15.4 overs to secure victory.
In the second fixture, Middle Belt Tigers overcame Western Dolphins in another competitive encounter, winning by four wickets.
Western Dolphins posted 129 for 6 in their 20 overs, with notable contributions from David Abiebhode and Ajekun Daniel. However, disciplined bowling from the Tigers, led by captain Runsewe Sulaimon, kept the total within reach.
During the chase, Solomon Chilemanya anchored the innings with an unbeaten 33 off 30 balls, guiding the Middle Belt Tigers to victory in 18.5 overs despite regular breakthroughs from the Dolphins bowlers.
Both matches marked a strong opening to the Nigeria Super League, with competitive performances highlighting the growing interest in cricket across the country.
