Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has announced the successful completion of the River Niger crossing of the 130 kilometre Obiafu Obrikom Oben gas pipeline, widely known as the OB3 project, marking a major milestone in Nigeria’s energy infrastructure development.
The achievement was delivered through its subsidiary, the NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company, according to a statement issued by the company’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Andy Odeh.
The OB3 pipeline, with a capacity of two billion standard cubic feet of gas per day, is designed to serve as a critical backbone connecting the eastern and western gas networks. It also extends supply connectivity to the northern corridor through the AKK pipeline, strengthening nationwide gas distribution.
NNPC stated that the successful River Niger crossing is expected to unlock more than 500 million standard cubic feet of additional gas supply for the domestic market in the near term. This increase is projected to support power generation, industrial expansion, and gas exports within the West African region.
Group Chief Executive Officer, Bashir Bayo Ojulari, described the development as a defining moment for Nigeria’s gas infrastructure. He noted that overcoming the technical challenges of the River Niger crossing demonstrates strong engineering capability and a commitment to execution excellence.
Ojulari further explained that the milestone builds on previous successes, including the AKK River Niger crossing completed in 2025, and reflects NNPC’s growing capacity to deliver complex energy projects, particularly within the challenging Niger Delta environment.
The completion of the OB3 pipeline segment is expected to enhance gas supply reliability, deepen domestic utilization, and contribute significantly to Nigeria’s economic growth through improved energy access.
