The family had arrived in the UK on September 16, but less than a month later, Mrs. Okeniyi succumbed to her illness, raising concerns within the community about the well-being of Nigerians who relocate to the UK.
Her passing has sparked an outpouring of grief among Nigerians in the UK, as the incident adds to a troubling pattern of similar cases where compatriots have d shortly after their arrival. Two other Nigerians have reportedly suffered the same fate in recent months, heightening fears and sparking discussions about healthcare and support systems available to new immigrants.
Following her passing, community members launched a GoFundMe campaign to assist the family with burial expenses. The campaign announcement reads: “With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Mrs. Olubunmi Okeniyi, who tragically passed away on 13/10/24, at 4:30 PM in Sunderland, UK. She is survived by her husband, Mr. Jacob Okeniyi, and we urgently seek donations to support her immediate burial, as her husband cannot afford the costs. Any contribution, no matter how small, will be greatly appreciated during this difficult time.”
Community member Godwin Ejeh disclosed that Mrs. Okeniyi, aged 49, had been battling breast cancer before her move to the UK. Upon arrival, she began receiving medical treatment, but doctors soon indicated that her prognosis was poor, and they recommended palliative care. Due to financial constraints, her palliative care was administered at home with the help of visiting healthcare professionals.
On the day she passed, Mrs. Okeniyi had asked for assistance to use the restroom. Her husband and children helped her, but shortly afterward, her condition deteriorated rapidly. The caregivers, who had recently left, were called back urgently but were unable to save her.
As of Wednesday evening, the fundraising campaign had garnered £5,800, with £3,557 raised through the GoFundMe platform. The community continues to rally around the family, providing emotional and financial support during this challenging period.
