The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Thursday, December 25, and Friday, December 26, 2025, as public holidays to celebrate Christmas and Boxing Day, respectively. Additionally, Thursday, January 1, 2026, will also be a public holiday for New Year celebrations. This announcement was communicated by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement from the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, on December 22, 2025.

In his message, Dr. Tunji-Ojo extended heartfelt Christmas and New Year wishes to Christians in Nigeria and worldwide. He highlighted the festive season as a time to reflect on values such as love, peace, humility, and sacrifice, which are integral to the birth of Jesus Christ. He emphasized the importance of these virtues in promoting unity, tolerance, and harmony throughout the country.

The Minister urged all Nigerians, irrespective of religious or ethnic backgrounds, to utilize this festive time to pray for national peace, security, and progress, while supporting the Federal Government’s efforts toward overall development and cohesion. He stated that the holiday season presents an opportunity to reinforce bonds of unity, show compassion, and renew commitments to nation-building.

Furthermore, Dr. Tunji-Ojo called on citizens to be law-abiding, vigilant, and moderate in their celebrations, and to work cooperatively with security agencies to ensure a peaceful holiday period. He concluded his message by wishing all Nigerians a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. This declaration is consistent with Nigeria’s tradition of observing holidays during the Christmas and New Year season, allowing citizens to celebrate and reflect on its significance.
