Nigeria’s healthcare system faces a critical emergency as the Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria reveals that 9,000 pharmacists have fled the country over the past four years in pursuit of better opportunities abroad. The exodus represents one of the most severe brain drain episodes in the nation’s medical sector, threatening to cripple pharmaceutical services across a country of over 200 million people.
Pharmacist Ambrose Ezeh, National Chairman of the association, delivered the stark warning at the organization’s 45th annual national scientific conference held in Abuja. Speaking at the conclusion of the three day gathering, Ezeh described the emigration trend as regrettable and called for urgent government intervention to stem the flow of qualified professionals leaving Nigerian shores. The departing pharmacists are primarily relocating to Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and the United States, where compensation packages and working conditions far exceed what they experience at home.
Particularly alarming is the acceleration of departures in 2026. More than 850 pharmacists obtained letters of good standing from regulatory authorities within just the first six months of this year alone, documentation required for professional registration in foreign jurisdictions. At this pace, the current year could see the highest single year exodus on record, compounding an already desperate situation in hospitals, clinics and community pharmacies nationwide.
According to Ezeh, multiple systemic failures are driving professionals away from Nigerian pharmacy practice. Poor reward systems that leave pharmacists struggling financially despite years of training top the list of grievances. Delayed enforcement of drug distribution guidelines has created an unregulated marketplace where unqualified personnel often dispense medications, undermining professional pharmacists and compromising patient safety. Disorganized medicine procurement networks further complicate the ability of pharmacists to perform their duties effectively, creating frustration that pushes many to seek opportunities elsewhere.
The continued hemorrhaging of pharmaceutical expertise carries devastating implications for healthcare delivery across Nigeria. Manpower shortages are already evident in many facilities, forcing remaining pharmacists to work excessive hours while managing dangerously high patient loads. Patient safety suffers when overworked professionals handle medication dispensing and counseling responsibilities. The sustainability of the entire pharmaceutical sector s in the balance as training programs struggle to replace departing professionals at anywhere near the rate of emigration.
Ezeh has challenged federal and state governments to take concrete action by strengthening the pharmaceutical industry through improved funding, better compensation structures and genuine professional recognition. He called for support of legislative initiatives, whether executive sponsored or private member bills, that address persistent challenges plaguing the sector. Without urgent intervention to make Nigeria competitive in retaining its trained healthcare workforce, the emigration crisis will continue depleting the country of professionals it desperately needs, leaving millions of citizens with diminished access to qualified pharmaceutical care at a time when healthcare demands are only growing.
