The Nigeria Football Federation has yet to hold any discussions regarding the extension or termination of Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle’s contract following Nigeria’s third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Nigeria ended the tournament unbeaten in seven matches, losing only in the semi-final to hosts Morocco on penalties. The Super Eagles also scored 14 goals, the highest tally in the country’s history at a single AFCON.
Chelle, who was appointed in January 2025 on a two-year deal, took charge at a difficult period after the NFF had appointed four different coaches within 10 months. At the time, confidence in the Franco-Malian was limited, especially with Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign already in trouble.
One year later, however, Chelle has gained widespread backing following what many described as an impressive AFCON campaign in Morocco. Despite falling short of the title, his tactical approach and team management earned praise from fans, players and administrators.
The most challenging phase of Chelle’s tenure remains the World Cup qualifying campaign, which ended in disappointment as Nigeria failed to secure an intercontinental play-off spot. Although the campaign had been compromised under previous coaches, Chelle was in charge during the decisive defeat to DR Congo in November 2025, a result that ended Nigeria’s World Cup hopes.
Despite this, NFF president Ibrahim Gusau expressed strong support for the coach, describing him as capable and hardworking. Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi also backed Chelle, stressing the importance of continuity within the national team.
Chelle has managed 15 competitive matches, winning 10 and drawing five. While he has attracted interest from other African nations, a top NFF source confirmed there are currently no talks about his future, as he is in the second year of his contract. A decision on renewal is expected later in the year.
