Israeli President Isaac Herzog held a phone call with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday, expressing “heartfelt condolences and solidarity” as Ukraine marks four years since Russia’s invasion.

The conflict, which began on February 24, 2022, has ed hundreds of thousands of people and is considered the deadliest war on European soil since World War II. Despite international mediation efforts, including talks relaunched last year by the United States, fighting continues, leaving Ukraine facing massive humanitarian and reconstruction challenges.

In a statement from Herzog’s office, the Israeli president conveyed his “deepest condolences to President Zelensky and the Ukrainian people for the devastating loss of life” and offered prayers for those wounded in body and spirit.

The leaders also discussed Israel’s support for Ukraine, including its stance in the recent United Nations General Assembly vote, and ongoing Israeli humanitarian assistance for those affected by the war.

Herzog and Zelensky further reviewed international efforts led by US President Donald Trump aimed at ending the conflict and alleviating the suffering and loss of life caused by the invasion.

The phone call reflects continued diplomatic engagement and solidarity with Ukraine from Israel amid the ongoing conflict. Observers note that while military and political resolutions remain elusive, humanitarian support and international coordination are critical to addressing the immediate and long-term needs of the Ukrainian people.

As Ukraine marks the fourth anniversary of the war, global attention remains focused on both the human toll of the conflict and the challenges of rebuilding a nation devastated by prolonged hostilities.
