Israel has approved a multi billion dollar agreement to acquire two new combat squadrons of advanced fighter jets from the United States, in a move aimed at strengthening its long term military capabilities.

The deal includes a squadron of F-35 Lightning II jets manufactured by Lockheed Martin and another squadron of F-15IA aircraft produced by Boeing, according to Israel’s Defence Ministry.

Defence Minister Israel Katz said the acquisition is part of a broader strategic initiative known as the Shield of Israel plan, designed to ensure the country maintains air superiority for decades.

He stated that the new aircraft would provide the Israeli Defence Forces with enhanced operational flexibility, allowing it to respond effectively to threats across different regions at any time. Israel already operates several F 35 jets, widely regarded as among the most advanced military aircraft in the world due to their stealth capabilities and cutting edge technology.

Israel’s air force has played a central role in recent military operations, particularly during the ongoing war in Gaza Strip. The campaign has involved thousands of air strikes targeting what Israeli officials describe as positions of Hamas, including tunnels and launch sites. However, the strikes have also caused widespread destruction across civilian infrastructure.

In addition to operations in Gaza, Israel has engaged in escalating tensions with Iran, carrying out long range strikes aimed at weakening strategic assets. Israeli authorities maintain that such operations are precise, while reports from Iran describe repeated air raids affecting key locations.

The approval of the jet acquisition aligns with Israel’s recently passed 2026 budget, which includes a significant increase in defence spending. Military expenditure has risen steadily since the outbreak of conflict following the October 7 2023 .

Israel also continues to confront threats from Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, underscoring the importance of maintaining a technological and operational edge in a volatile regional security environment.
