Iran Condemns US Maritime Blockade as Tensions Rise in Gulf Region

Iran has strongly condemned a United States maritime blockade around its ports, calling it a serious violation of national sovereignty and international law. The criticism came after Washington enforced restrictions on ships entering and leaving Iranian coastal areas, escalating tensions between the two countries despite an ongoing ceasefire agreement.

In a formal letter addressed to United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres, Iran’s ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani described the blockade as unlawful and dangerous. He warned that such actions undermine the principles of maritime law and threaten regional ility.

The blockade was ordered by US President Donald Trump following unsuccessful peace negotiations. The directive includes strict measures against any Iranian vessels that attempt to challenge the restrictions, with warnings of possible military action. The move has raised concerns globally, particularly as it coincides with a fragile two week ceasefire mediated by regional actors.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a focal point in the crisis. This strategic waterway handles a significant portion of global oil and gas shipments, making any disruption a potential threat to international markets. Both Iran and the United States have taken steps that limit navigation through the strait, further increasing tensions.

Guterres has urged all parties to respect freedom of navigation and avoid actions that could escalate the situation. Meanwhile, Iran has called on Middle Eastern nations hosting US military bases to halt what it describes as wrongful cooperation and to compensate for damages.

The situation continues to evolve, with diplomatic efforts ongoing but uncertainty still looming over the region.
