A group wearing IPOB attire and displaying IPOB flags has announced the suspension of the long-standing Monday sit-at-home directive across Nigeria’s South-East region. In a viral video released on Sunday, the group stated that markets, schools, businesses, and workplaces should resume normal operations from Monday, February 9, 2026, assuring residents that it is safe to do so.
The announcement reportedly followed instructions from Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, according to the group. The spokesperson urged traders, students, and workers to return to their routines to restore normal economic, educational, and social life in the region. The group, however, warned Anambra State Governor Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo against interference in the affairs of traders, threatening punitive measures if life was made difficult for marketers.
Reacting to the development, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) distanced itself from the group. IPOB spokesperson Emma Powerful described the members as criminals allegedly recruited by Simon Ekpa to deilize the South-East. “We don’t know them. IPOB does not have such people. They are criminals recruited by infiltrator Simon Ekpa,” Powerful stated.
He further emphasized that IPOB and the Eastern Security Network (ESN) are not affiliated with individuals involved in ings, kidnappings, or destruction of lives and property in the region. “Anyone involved with criminals and kidnappers under the guise of IPOB will not be accepted and will be called out,” he added.
