Houston Dynamo transfers midfielder Nico Lodeiro to Club Nacional de Football in Uruguay

Houston Dynamo FC has officially transferred veteran midfielder Nicolás “Nico” Lodeiro to Club Nacional de Football, his boyhood team in Uruguay. The 36-year-old Uruguayan international returns to Nacional after a distinguished career in Major League Soccer

Lodeiro joined the Dynamo in February 2025 on a one-year contract with a club option for 2026. During his tenure in Houston, he made 19 appearances across all competitions, contributing one goal and one assist. His final match for the Dynamo was on June 28, 2025, in a 1-0 victory over St. Louis City SC, where he played the last five minutes.

Prior to his stint in Houston, Lodeiro had an impactful eight-year tenure with Seattle Sounders FC from 2016 to 2023. During this period, he was instrumental in the Sounders’ success, helping the team secure two MLS Cup titles in 2016 and 2019, as well as the CONCACAF Champions League title in 2022. In 191 regular-season matches with Seattle, he recorded 41 goals and 80 assists.

In 2024, Lodeiro joined Orlando City SC, where he continued to showcase his ss, contributing one goal and 11 assists in 34 MLS matches. His consistent performance earned him MLS Best XI honors in 2018, 2020, and 2022, and he was a finalist for the 2020 MVP award.

On the international stage, Lodeiro earned 60 caps for the Uruguay national team, scoring five goals. He represented his country in two FIFA World Cups, in 2010 and 2014, and was part of the squad that won the 2011 Copa América.

Dynamo president of soccer Pat Onstad praised Lodeiro’s contributions to the league and the team. “Nico is one of the great competitors in the history of MLS, who has inspired others with his relentless work ethic. Onstad said. “We want to sincerely thank Nico for his contributions to the league and soccer in this country.

Lodeiro’s return to Nacional marks the conclusion of a significant chapter in his career, as he returns to the club where he began his professional journey. His experience and leadership are expected to bolster Nacional’s midfield as they continue to compete in the Uruguayan Primera División.
