Residents of Otukpo in Benue State are counting their losses after a heavy rainstorm caused widespread destruction across the historic town. The downpour, which many initially welcomed as the first rain of the year and a relief from the scorching heat, quickly turned disastrous as flooding damaged homes, disrupted businesses, and left several families displaced.
Reports from the community indicate that the storm caused severe flooding in many parts of Otukpo, destroying properties built through years of hard work. Many residents woke up to damaged buildings, submerged household items, and blocked roads, which brought commercial activities to a standstill. Traders, shop owners, and homeowners have all been affected, with some losing goods and personal belongings to the floodwaters.
In response to the disaster, the paramount ruler of Idoma land, His Royal Majesty Agabaidu Elaigwu Odogbo Obagaji John, the Och Idoma, alongside the Idoma Area Traditional Council, has appealed to residents to remain calm while efforts are made to address the situation.
Speaking on behalf of the royal father, the Mayor of Otukpo, Chief Ignatius Ogbogo, called on the Federal Government and the Benue State Government to urgently intervene through the National Emergency Management Agency NEMA. He requested the immediate provision of emergency relief materials such as food supplies, blankets, and temporary shelter materials for families displaced by the flooding.
The mayor also urged authorities to prioritize the rehabilitation and expansion of drainage systems within Otukpo to prevent similar disasters in the future. He further appealed for the creation of a special intervention fund to help affected traders and homeowners rebuild their homes and businesses.
While expressing sympathy to victims, the traditional leadership assured residents that the community would work together to recover from the disaster. Residents were also advised to clear drainage channels around their homes and avoid weak structures during storms.
Community leaders emphasized that Otukpo has always been known for its resilience and unity, expressing confidence that with collective effort the town will recover and rebuild stronger.
