France Sends Additional Troops to Overseas Territories Following Unrest

French authorities confirmed on January 29 2026 that additional troops were deployed to several overseas territories after days of unrest marked by protests vandalism and clashes with security forces. The decision followed reports of damaged public buildings disrupted transport services and growing tensions between residents and local authorities.

Government officials said the troop deployment was aimed at restoring calm protecting critical infrastructure and ensuring public safety. Interior ministry representatives stressed that the move was precautionary and temporary while dialogue efforts continue with community leaders and elected officials in the affected regions.

Local grievances have centered on economic inequality high living costs and perceived neglect from mainland France.
