The 2023 All Progressives Congress governorship candidate in Kano State, Nasiru Gawuna, has officially joined the African Democratic Congress, strengthening the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Gawuna, a former deputy governor of Kano State, received his membership card on Tuesday at Gawuna Ward in Nasarawa Local Government Area. The registration ceremony drew thousands of supporters and notable political figures, including former Governor Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, immediate past deputy governor Aminu Gwarzo, and ADC state chairman Musa Ungogo.

After registering, Gawuna thanked his supporters and party leaders, pledging commitment to advancing the ADC’s growth and influence in the state. His defection follows his voluntary resignation from the APC, announced in a March 29, 2026 letter to his ward chairman, in which he expressed gratitude for his time in the party.

In addition, Gawuna stepped down as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria on March 31, 2026, in compliance with a directive from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu requiring political appointees to resign ahead of elections. He also highlighted his prior roles as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Bayero University, Kano, as part of his public service contributions.

Political analysts view Gawuna’s defection as a major boost for the ADC in Kano, given his political influence and strong performance in the 2023 governorship election where he secured 890,705 votes. Observers believe this realignment could significantly reshape the state’s political dynamics as key actors reposition ahead of the 2027 elections.
