Former Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Mike Okiro, has endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term in office, describing his administration as courageous, reform-driven, and unprecedented in Nigeria’s political history.
Okiro made the remarks on Sunday while speaking with journalists in Ibadan, where he said President Tinubu assumed office at a time of daunting national challenges but has continued to address them through what he described as carefully sequenced and gradual policy decisions.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the former police chief was in Ibadan to formally endorse the President and to inaugurate the Grassroots Mobilisation for Tinubu initiative, aimed at strengthening nationwide political engagement and support.
He said the President’s cross-sector reforms were already yielding positive results, despite the initial hardships caused by some of the policies. Okiro expressed confidence that the ongoing reforms would reposition Nigeria for sustainable growth and ility before the end of Tinubu’s first term.
Drawing from experience, Okiro cited Tinubu’s record as Governor of Lagos State, noting that his past achievements clearly demonstrated his leadership capacity and offered insight into what Nigerians could expect over an eight-year tenure.
He argued that no Nigerian President had shown similar boldness in governance, particularly highlighting the removal of fuel subsidy, which he acknowledged caused short-term hardship but is now contributing to economic ilisation.
Okiro urged Nigerians to remain patient and supportive of the administration, stressing that sustained public backing would enable President Tinubu to consolidate reforms and ultimately deliver long-term national development.
The former IGP, who holds the traditional title of Maradin Hausawa of Ibadanland, also paid a condolence visit to the family of the late Sarkin Sasa during his stay in the city.
On security matters, Okiro expressed optimism that ongoing interventions would significantly reduce insecurity across the country. He commended the President’s commitment to strengthening national security and recalled working closely with Tinubu during his tenure as Lagos State governor, attributing the state’s relative peace to a robust security architecture that remains influential today.
Okiro was accompanied by leaders of various youth and elders’ forums, including the National Coordinator of the Northern Youth and Elder’s Awareness Forum, Alhaji Mahmud Sani-Yerima, alongside other zonal coordinators.
