Former United States Ambassador to Denmark Alan Leventhal has offered his assessment of the state of US NATO relations and President Donald Trump’s messaging to global adversaries amid renewed controversy surrounding Greenland.
In an interview with ABC News correspondent Stephanie Ramos Leventhal discussed NATO’s role in current transatlantic dynamics and the implications of Trump’s continued push to acquire Greenland a semi autonomous territory of Denmark and a strategic Arctic region.
Leventhal said Trump’s rhetoric has placed strain on alliances that have traditionally been built on trust shared security commitments and consultation. He emphasized that NATO remains a cornerstone of collective defense and that the strength of the alliance depends on cooperation rather than unilateral pressure.
According to Leventhal Greenland holds undeniable strategic importance particularly as Arctic shipping routes expand and competition over critical minerals intensifies. However he stressed that any discussion about Greenland’s future must respect Danish sovereignty and the will of the Greenlandic people.
He noted that NATO’s involvement in Arctic security has grown steadily and that cooperation among allies is essential to counter emerging threats from Russia and China in the region. Leventhal warned that framing Greenland primarily as a transactional objective risks undermining long standing partnerships and complicating broader security goals.
The former ambassador also addressed Trump’s broader message to adversaries saying it appears designed to project strength but can blur the line between deterrence and alienation of allies. He argued that rebuilding alliance cohesion will require clearer diplomacy reassurance to partners and renewed commitment to shared values.
Leventhal concluded that while disagreements within NATO are not new the current moment calls for careful leadership and dialogue to ensure the alliance remains unified in the face of evolving global challenges.
