Folarin Balogun Reveals Why He Chose USMNT Over England as World Cup Run Continues

Folarin Balogun’s decision to wear the red, white and blue could define an entire generation of American soccer. The striker, who scored twice in the United States Men’s National Team’s commanding 4-1 victory over Paraguay to open their 2026 World Cup campaign in Los Angeles, has finally opened up about the choice that made him available to represent the Stars and Stripes rather than England or Nigeria.

Born in New York by happenstance while his Nigerian parents were visiting from London, Balogun’s very existence as an American citizen hinges on a twist of fate. His mother, seven months pregnant at the time, was denied boarding for her return flight to London due to airline safety regulations regarding heavily pregnant passengers. Had she been allowed to fly home, Balogun would have been born in England, and the entire trajectory of his international career might have taken a drastically different path. Instead, he entered the world on American soil, giving him the option to represent the country that would eventually benefit most from that unexpected birth.

Speaking during a live video chat on Fox Sports’ World Cup coverage, Balogun explained that fan support and American cultural values ultimately swayed his decision approximately three to three and a half years ago. The forward cited the enthusiastic backing he received from American supporters and the ambition embedded in American culture as decisive factors in his choice. His words reflect a player who connected not just with a federation’s recruitment pitch, but with soing deeper about national identity and shared values.

England’s loss is undeniably America’s gain. Imagining the Three Lions’ with both Harry Kane and Balogun operating in tandem presents a frightening prospect for any defense. England has started their own World Cup campaign impressively, with Kane scoring twice in a victory over Croatia that secured control of Group L. Meanwhile, Nigeria failed to qualify for the tournament entirely, finishing second in their CAF qualification group before falling short in the playoff stage. Balogun’s services would have been invaluable to the Super Eagles, but the opportunity never materialized.

For the United States, Balogun’s impact has been transformative at precisely the right moment. With Christian Pulisic sidelined by injury during the team’s second match against Australia, the striker has shouldered offensive responsibilities and delivered when it mattered most. His performances have helped the USMNT win their group for only the third time in the nation’s World Cup history, securing passage to the knockout phase and setting up what could be the deepest run an American men’s team has ever achieved on soccer’s biggest stage.

Looking ahead, Balogun and his teammates face Turkiye on Thursday at 10 p.m. ET in a group stage match that carries little significance for an already qualified American side. Expect wholesale rotation and rest for key players as the coaching staff looks to keep their stars fresh for the elimination rounds that follow. Whether Balogun’s decision to represent the United States ultimately leads to World Cup glory remains to be seen, but his choice has already altered the competitive landscape of international soccer and given American fans a genuine superstar to rally behind when the stakes rise in the knockout phase.
