A South Florida teenager Jahara Malik has been sentenced to 17 years in prison after being convicted in the fatal poking of her boyfriend Yahkeim Keimo Lollar during an emotional court hearing in Miami Dade County.
Malik who was 17 years old at the time of the incident was prosecuted as an adult for the ing which occurred on December 20 2024. Lollar a teenage football player d after suffering wounds during the confrontation.
Judge Christine Hernandez delivered the sentence on Tuesday in a packed courtroom ordering Malik to serve 17 years in a Florida state prison followed by five years of reporting probation.
During the proceedings the judge also imposed a special probation condition requiring Malik to write yearly letters every December 20 reflecting on the crime and the impact it has had on her life and the lives of others.
Appearing in court dressed in a black suit Malik stood quietly as the sentence was read. Before sentencing she addressed the court and expressed remorse over the incident.
“Every day I sit and think about the damage I caused” Malik said during the hearing. She added that although the victim’s family wanted her imprisoned she already felt trapped by guilt and emotional pain.
Defense lawyers had asked the court to sentence Malik as a youthful offender and requested placement in a Miami Dade boot camp correctional programme rather than a lengthy prison sentence. Prosecutors however argued for a tougher punishment seeking 20 years in prison followed by 10 years probation.
Following the ruling emotions ran high among both families. Relatives of the victim embraced outside the courtroom expressing relief and satisfaction with the judgment.
Nathalie Jean mother of Yahkeim Lollar said she believed justice had been served and hoped Malik would reflect deeply on the consequences of her actions while serving her sentence.
Meanwhile members of Malik’s family broke down in tears arguing that the punishment was too severe for someone who was still a teenager at the time of the crime.
