The Federation of Informal Workers Organisations of Nigeria FIWON has urged the Federal Government to introduce a 50 50 pension co contribution scheme for informal workers across the country. The organisation said the move is necessary to improve social protection and provide financial security for millions of Nigerians working outside the formal sector.
FIWON stated that over 93 percent of Nigeria’s workforce operates within the informal economy without access to pensions healthcare workplace insurance or other social welfare benefits. The group noted that despite contributing significantly to the economy informal workers continue to face hardship and uncertainty.
In a statement signed by FIWON General Secretary Gbenga Komolafe and President Bolaji Saadu the organisation listed traders artisans transport workers farmers mechanics construction workers waste pickers domestic workers garment makers food processors and vendors among those affected by poor welfare protection.
The group criticised the current micro pension scheme managed by the National Pension Commission PenCom describing it as ineffective for low income earners. According to FIWON inflation and irregular income have made it difficult for informal workers to save enough for retirement.
FIWON called on the government to adopt a matching contribution arrangement where government contributes an equal amount to workers’ pension savings. The organisation said such a system would encourage participation and make retirement savings more sustainable.
The group also demanded subsidised healthcare and free health insurance for vulnerable Nigerians including pregnant women children under five elderly citizens and persons with disabilities.
FIWON further urged authorities to extend the Employees Compensation Act to informal workers to guarantee compensation for workplace injuries disabilities and deaths. The organisation stressed the need for inclusive policies that protect the welfare dignity and rights of Nigerian workers.
