The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has urged the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) to reschedule their planned protest in Abuja, citing potential security risks. The solidarity rally, initially scheduled for Tuesday, February 3, 2026, was to show support for affected workers in the FCT.
In a joint statement, NLC spokesperson Benson Upah and TUC Secretary General N. A. Toro confirmed the rally, instructing all affiliates and state councils to mobilize members and ensure full participation in the lawful demonstration.
However, the FCT Police, through Public Relations Officer SP Josephine Adeh, warned that intelligence reports suggest plans by the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria and other non-state actors to infiltrate and hijack the protest, potentially threatening public peace and security.
While acknowledging the constitutional right to peaceful assembly, the police emphasized that their request to postpone the rally aims to protect residents’ safety, freedom of movement, and the uninterrupted conduct of daily activities in the Federal Capital Territory. Adeh stated, “In view of the above, and in the overriding interest of public safety, the FCT Police Command respectfully appeals to the organisers of the planned protest to consider rescheduling the activity to a later date and time.”
The protest comes amid an indefinite strike by FCT administration workers that began on January 19 over unpaid salaries, promotion arrears, and poor working conditions. The FCT authorities approached the National Industrial Court to declare the strike illegal and sought to restrain the unions, but the court ordered workers to resume duties. The NLC and TUC have accused the authorities of intimidation and vowed to resist any undue pressure.
The police stressed that their advisory is preventive, aiming to forestall any breakdown of law and order while respecting citizens’ rights to lawful protest.
