Erdogan Hosts Balkan Leaders in Istanbul to Strengthen Regional Cooperation and Peace

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met with foreign ministers from several Balkan countries in Istanbul on Friday to discuss bilateral relations and pressing regional issues. The gathering brought together senior officials as part of the second meeting of the Balkan Peace Platform, an initiative aimed at strengthening dialogue and cooperation across the region.

Those attending included Montenegrin Foreign Minister Ervin Ibrahimovic, Kosovan Foreign Minister Donica Gervella Schwarz, Bosnian Herzegovinian Foreign Minister Elmedin Konakovic, North Macedonian Foreign Minister Timco Mucinski, Albanian Foreign Minister Elisa Spiropal, and Serbian Deputy Foreign Minister Nevena Jovanovic, according to Türkiye’s Communications Directorate.

Erdogan expressed his satisfaction at hosting the meeting in Istanbul and thanked the participating countries for their active contributions. He emphasized that the continuation of the Balkan Peace Platform reflects a shared commitment to dialogue and regional ownership in addressing common challenges.

During the discussions, Erdogan highlighted the importance of cooperation on issues such as border security, energy, technology, and transportation. He noted that consultations carried out with a strong sense of regional responsibility are essential for building long term ility and trust among Balkan nations.

Acknowledging that both the world and the Balkans are facing complex and overlapping challenges, Erdogan said that strengthening solidarity and mutual understanding among member countries has become more important than ever. He stressed the need for a collective approach that learns from the hardships of the past while focusing on a more le and cooperative future.

The Turkish president also underlined Türkiye’s role in efforts to reduce inility and promote peace in the region. He pointed to ongoing peace focused initiatives in various conflict zones, including Ukraine, Gaza, and Syria, as part of a broader commitment to regional and international ility.

Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Communications Director Burhanettin Duran, the president’s chief adviser Akif Cagatay Kilic, and other senior officials also attended the meeting. The gathering reinforced Türkiye’s position as a key diplomatic actor in the Balkans and highlighted the continued relevance of dialogue in addressing regional and global challenges.
