The English Football League has approved a major ce to the promotion play offs in the EFL Championship with the number of participating clubs set to increase from four to six starting next season.
The decision was confirmed after a meeting of the league governing body which oversees the three divisions below the Premier League. Officials said the new structure is aimed at increasing competition and providing more clubs with an opportunity to compete for promotion to the top tier of English football.
Under the revised format the teams finishing first and second in the Championship will still gain automatic promotion to the Premier League at the end of the regular season. However clubs finishing between third and eighth place will now enter the promotion play offs expanding the number of teams involved in the final race for promotion.
Chief executive of the English Football League Trevor Birch explained that the ce followed months of discussions with clubs and stakeholders across the competition.
According to Birch the updated structure is expected to strengthen the league while giving more clubs and their supporters a realistic chance of achieving promotion.
The new format will introduce eliminator matches involving the teams that finish fifth to eighth in the standings. The winners of those games will then move on to face the third and fourth placed teams in two leg semi finals.
Officials also confirmed that the exact format of the final match will be determined later in the year.
The current play off system has existed since the 1989 to 1990 season. Traditionally it features two leg semi finals followed by a single match final held at Wembley Stadium.
The Championship play off final is often described as the most financially valuable single game in football because promotion to the Premier League brings enormous revenue opportunities.
Last season Sunderland AFC secured promotion after defeating Sheffield United in the final. The victory reportedly generated at least two hundred million pounds in additional income through broadcasting rights sponsorship deals and commercial growth.
League officials believe expanding the play offs will maintain excitement throughout the season and give more clubs the chance to compete for a place in the Premier League.
