Reaching the final of the FIFA World Cup is one of the highest achievements in football, but falling short at the final hurdle often leaves a lasting mark. While champions are celebrated forever, some nations are remembered for their repeated near misses on the biggest stage.

Here is a look at the countries that have lost the most World Cup finals.

Germany
Germany holds the record for the most final defeats, with four losses in 1966, 1982, 1986, and 2002. Despite this, their eight final appearances and four titles highlight remarkable consistency at the highest level of international football.

Argentina
Argentina has suffered three final losses in 1930, 1990, and 2014. Their 2014 defeat to Germany in extra time remains one of the most painful moments in their football history, despite their overall success.

Italy
Italy has lost two finals, in 1970 and 1994. The 1994 loss to Brazil via penalties is particularly memorable, showcasing the fine margins that define football at this level.

France
France has also lost two finals, in 2006 and 2022. The 2022 final against Argentina, which ended 3 to 3 before a penalty out, is widely regarded as one of the greatest matches in World Cup history.

Netherlands
Netherlands stands out for having lost three finals in 1974, 1978, and 2010 without ever winning the tournament. Their history is often viewed as one of football’s greatest missed opportunities.

Brazil
Brazil, the most successful nation in World Cup history, has experienced two final defeats in 1950 and 1998. The 1950 loss on home soil, often referred to as the Maracanazo, remains one of the sport’s most shocking upsets.

These nations illustrate that even the strongest teams can fall short, and that success in football often comes with moments of heartbreak as well as glory.
