China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) began extensive military exercises around Taiwan, codenamed “Justice Mission 2025.” These drills include live-fire operations conducted in the Taiwan Strait and surrounding areas.
The PLA’s Eastern Theater Command stated that the exercises aim to “safeguard China’s sovereignty” and serve as a “stern warning” against Taiwanese independence and foreign interference. The maneuvers involve combat-readiness patrols, joint operations, and simulated strikes on land and sea targets, utilizing diverse military assets like fighter jets, drones, and long-range rockets to test the PLA’s ability to execute a blockade of Taiwan’s key ports.
In response, Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense condemned the drills as “irresponsible” and a threat to regional peace, stating they reaffirm the Chinese Communist Party’s aggressive nature.
Consequently, Taiwan has initiated rapid training exercises, keeping its air and naval forces on high alert. These military actions follow the U.S. Department of Defense’s recent approval of an $11.1 billion arms sale to Taiwan, which includes advanced missile systems and repair equipment.
This sale represents one of the largest U.S. military aid packages to Taiwan, prompting China to impose sanctions on 20 U.S. defense companies and ten executives.
The live-fire drills are set to continue through December 30, 2025, disrupting international travel for over 100,000 passengers. The U.S. State Department defended the arms sale as a means to bolster Taiwan’s defense and maintain regional ility, with Taiwan expressing gratitude for this support.
These developments highlight escalating tensions in the Taiwan Strait and the intricate dynamics of regional security and international relations.
