The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria has elected Matthew Man Oso Ndagoso, Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Kaduna, as its new President.
Ndagoso emerged as President during the 2026 First Plenary Meeting of Catholic bishops held in Abuja. He succeeds Lucius Ugorji, whose four year tenure as President concludes this February.
The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria is the highest decision making body of the Catholic Church in the country. It coordinates spiritual leadership and social engagement while serving as a moral voice in national affairs. The conference also unites bishops, clergy, and the faithful across Nigeria.
A statement issued by Michael Banjo, Secretary General of the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, confirmed that the newly elected principal officers will be formally presented at the closing ceremony of the plenary.
Other officials elected include Alfred Adewale Martins as Vice President, Peter Odetoyinbo as Secretary, and Peter Chukwu as Assistant Secretary.
The statement noted that additional bishops were elected to oversee various directorates, departments, and units within the Catholic Secretariat and affiliated agencies. The faithful were urged to keep the new leadership in prayer as they begin their four year term, committed to serving the Church and promoting the common good across the nation.
