A chance to play at the World Cup remains the ultimate dream for any footballer, offering a global stage to compete among the very best. Yet, talent alone does not guarantee participation, as several elite players will miss the 2026 tournament despite their quality and influence at club level.

With major footballing nations like Italy and emerging teams such as Nigeria, Cameroon, Serbia and Wales failing to qualify, a number of high profile stars have been left out of the tournament set to take place across the United States of America, Mexico and Canada.

In goal, Gianluigi Donnarumma headlines the list after Italy suffered another painful qualification setback. Despite his impressive career achievements, including European success, he is yet to make a World Cup appearance.

In defence, Nikola Milenkovic and Federico Dimarco miss out following disappointing campaigns with Serbia and Italy respectively. Dominik Szoboszlai, though naturally a midfielder, has been deployed in a defensive role and also joins the list after Hungary fell short in qualification.

The midfield features Nicolò Barella and Sandro Tonali, both key figures for Italy, whose absence from the tournament highlights the country’s ongoing struggles on the international stage.

In , several exciting names will not be present. Bryan Mbeumo misses out after Cameroon failed in the playoffs, while Khvicha Kvaratskhelia could not inspire Georgia to qualification. Hugo Ekitike is ruled out due to injury, adding to France’s selection challenges.

Veteran striker Robert Lewandowski may have played his final World Cup after Poland’s elimination, while Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen also misses out despite a strong individual performance during qualification.

These absences underline the competitive nature of World Cup qualification, where even the brightest talents can be left watching from home.
