Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has expressed pride in Nigeria’s performance at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), praising the team for inspiring millions of Nigerians. Troost-Ekong retired from international football in December 2025, three weeks before the tournament, after being named in coach Eric Chelle’s 55-man provisional squad.
Currently captaining Saudi Pro League side Al Kholood, the 32-year-old defender reflected on his decade-long national team career in his latest Captain’s Column. “December was a deeply personal and emotional month for me, as I officially stepped away from international football after 10 unforgettable years representing Nigeria,” he wrote. He highlighted the pride of captaining the Super Eagles and the significance of every match, anthem, and moment of triumph.
Troost-Ekong also lauded Nigeria’s performance in Morocco, where the Super Eagles completed a perfect group-stage campaign and advanced to the quarter-finals. “Watching Nigeria play with hunger, personality and belief filled me with pride,” he said, expressing his continued support despite retiring.
Nigeria will face two-time champions Algeria in the quarter-final, aiming for a fourth AFCON title after victories in 1980, 1994, and 2013. Troost-Ekong, who was named the Most Valuable Player at the 2024 AFCON in Ivory Coast, scored three goals in that tournament, taking his career AFCON tally to five—the highest by a defender in competition history.
Born in the Netherlands to a Dutch mother and Nigerian father, Troost-Ekong initially represented the Netherlands at youth level before committing to Nigeria at senior level. He debuted on June 13, 2015, against Chad in an AFCON qualifier, and ended his international career with eight goals in 83 appearances, his final outing being a substitute appearance against Gabon on November 13, 2025.
