Benue State is set to become home to a major new military installation after Governor Hyacinth Alia committed his administration to providing comprehensive support for the newly approved Nigerian Army 5 Division, including land acquisition and complete construction of its headquarters. The governor made the announcement Tuesday during a high level meeting with the Army Headquarters Implementation Committee at the Old Banquet Hall of Government House in Makurdi, signaling a significant shift in the security landscape of the troubled Middle Belt state.

Governor Alia characterized the elishment of the military formations as a watershed moment for security in Benue, a state that has endured prolonged cycles of violence, communal clashes, and armed s over the past decade. The reverend turned politician expressed confidence that the expanded military presence would fundamentally strengthen the state’s security architecture and restore public confidence in the ability of authorities to protect lives and property. His administration has pledged to provide not only land for all approved military formations and units but also the necessary logistics to ensure the smooth operational launch of the new division.

The governor directed his gratitude toward President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the new Army formations and specifically choosing Benue State to host the 5 Division headquarters. He also thanked the Chief of Army Staff and the broader leadership of the Nigerian Army for what he described as a decision that reflected an understanding of the unique security challenges facing Benue. For years, residents of the state have called for stronger military deployment to counter persistent threats from armed herders, bandits, and other criminal elements that have displaced thousands and disrupted agricultural activities in what was once considered Nigeria’s food basket.

During the ceremony, Governor Alia took time to honor the sacrifices of military personnel, paying tribute to officers and solrs who have lost their lives in defense of the nation. He specifically praised security forces currently serving in Benue for their commitment to protecting communities despite challenging operational conditions. According to a statement released by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Sir Tersoo Kula, the governor also congratulated Major General M. K. Gara on his appointment as the pioneer General Officer Commanding of the 5 Division, assuring him of unwavering cooperation from the state government as the new command takes shape.

The Army Headquarters Implementation Committee’s visit to Benue represents a crucial step in translating federal approval into operational reality. Led by Major General Raymond T. Utsaha and accompanied by Major General Gara, the team is tasked with coordinating the elishment of the new military formations and ensuring all necessary infrastructure and administrative frameworks are in place. The presence of both the implementation team leader and the incoming divisional commander underscores the seriousness with which military leadership is approaching the assignment and suggests an accelerated timeline for operationalization.

Looking ahead, the successful elishment of the 5 Division could reshape security dynamics not only in Benue but across the broader Middle Belt region, which has struggled with farmer herder conflicts, kidnapping, and armed banditry. As construction of the division headquarters moves forward and units begin deploying across the state, residents and security analysts alike will be watching closely to see whether the enhanced military footprint translates into tangible improvements in public safety. The real test will come in the months ahead as the new command develops its operational strategies and demonstrates its capacity to address the complex security threats that have long plagued this strategically important agricultural region.
