Central Texas has been devastated by catastrophic flash floods that have claimed at least 67 lives, including 21 children, and left numerous individuals missing. The disaster unfolded in the early hours of July 4, 2025, when a severe storm unleashed up to 12 inches of rain in just a few hours, causing the Guadalupe River to surge 26 feet in 45 minutes. This rapid rise overwhelmed communities, leading to widespread destruction and loss of life.

Kerr County was the hardest hit, with 59 fatalities reported, including 21 children. The floodwaters inundated homes, vehicles, and infrastructure, leaving a trail of devastation. In addition to the confirmed deaths, 11 girls and a camp counselor from Camp Mystic, a century-old Christian girls’ camp along the Guadalupe River, remain missing. The camp, which was housing approximately 750 campers at the time, experienced significant damage, and the search for the missing individuals continues.

Rescue operations have been extensive, involving helicopters, boats, and drones. Over 850 people have been rescued, many found clinging to trees or stranded in floodwaters. The National Weather Service had issued flood warnings for the area, but the scale and rapid onset of the flooding were unprecedented, catching many residents and officials by surprise.

In response to the disaster, Texas Governor Greg Abbott declared a day of prayer, urging unity and support for victims and rescuers. The Dallas Cowboys have pledged $500,000 to the Salvation Army to aid recovery efforts, matching a similar donation from the Houston Texans. These contributions aim to support immediate rescue, relief, and long-term recovery efforts in the affected communities.

The tragedy has raised questions about preparedness and the adequacy of flood warning systems in the region. Survivors have described the floods as a “pitch black wall of death,” highlighting the need for improved forecasting and timely alerts to prevent future disasters.

As the community begins the arduous process of recovery, the resilience and solidarity of the people of Central Texas remain evident. Ongoing search and rescue operations continue, with authorities and volunteers working tirelessly to locate the missing and provide assistance to those affected by this unprecedented catastrophe.
